The Nexus Apprenticeship Skills Hub is an informal vocational training programme designed to equip youth and disadvantaged groups with practical, hands-on skills that prepare them for self-employment and job creation. Unlike conventional classroom-based training, the Nexus Apprenticeship model emphasizes learning by doing, ensuring that trainees acquire both technical competence and business acumen.

Currently, the Hub is operational in Olwiyo, where it serves as a center of excellence in apprenticeship-based skills training.

What Makes the Nexus Apprenticeship Hub Unique?

  1. Practical, Product-Oriented Training
    • Trainees learn by working on real products such as furniture, garments, metalwork, or construction items.
    • The hub blends practical learning with essential theory, ensuring a well-rounded skills development process.
    • Products made during training are sold, helping learners gain a sense of the market value of their skills.
  2. Master Craftsmen Instruction
    • Training is delivered by experienced artisans and craftsmen who mentor trainees through direct supervision.
    • This traditional apprenticeship system ensures that skills are passed down effectively while maintaining quality and relevance.
  3. Market-Driven Approach
    • Skills taught at the hub are chosen based on local market demand, ensuring employability and business opportunities.
    • Trainees are encouraged to view themselves as entrepreneurs, not just workers.
  4. Pathways to Employment and Enterprise
    • Graduates can either seek employment in workshops and industries or start their own businesses.
    • Where possible, trainees are linked to access-to-finance opportunities through SIFCO Cooperative and WezaCash.

Impact

The Nexus Apprenticeship Skills Hub is contributing to:

  • Reducing youth unemployment by providing employable skills.
  • Empowering marginalized groups with a sustainable livelihood pathway.
  • Strengthening the local economy by creating a pool of skilled artisans and entrepreneurs.
  • Restoring dignity and hope to young people who may have missed out on formal education.

Vision

To create a network of community-based apprenticeship hubs across Uganda, where young people learn practical skills by making real products, and are empowered to earn a living, start enterprises, and contribute to local development.
